In the animal kingdom, it's a pretty common law that the larger you are, the more you sleep. There's no denying that elephants are some of the largest animals out there, and yet they only sleep about two hours every night! Plus, those are only light naps that they take standing up. Wild African elephants only lay down and go into deep sleep (during which dreaming and memory consolidation take place) every three to four days. This phenomenon has not been observed in African elephants kept in captivity; those sleep for about four to six hours nightly. When BBC reached out to Professor Paul Manger, who was involved in the research, he said, "Elephants are the shortest sleeping mammal." You may be wondering how such a thing is tracked, and the answer may surprise you. In fact, the research team used a device similar to a fitness tracker, which they fitted under the skin of two elephants' trunks in Botswana. They knew the elephant was sleeping if its trunk didn't move for five or more minutes. More research is on the way, since scientists are curious about the sleeping habits of male elephants (the two they tracked were female). We still don't know why or how elephants survive on so little sleep, but we're excited to find out more! You can read more about this story here (BBC). We found this image on Max Pixel.
